At Danika, we love zero waste! In this article, we suggest ideas for replacing everyday products with healthy ones that are kind to the planet.
1 – Choose a wooden toothbrush
Did you know? In France, around 300 million toothbrushes are bought every year. Yet these accessories are among the hardest waste to recycle. On top of that, they contain BPA, a chemical harmful to health.
Want to be done with disposable toothbrushes? Replace them with wooden toothbrushes with refillable heads.
2 – Bite into solid toothpaste
For a zero-waste bathroom, replace the traditional toothpaste tube with a healthy, environmentally friendly alternative: solid toothpaste. This hygiene product is made from ingredients of natural origin, such as green clay or vegetable charcoal.
How do you use solid toothpaste? Nothing could be easier: dampen your toothbrush and rub it directly on the toothpaste, or opt for a chewable toothpaste.

3 – Choose a solid soap for a zero-waste bathroom
Ideal for replacing industrial shower gel, solid soap is a timeless product. With it, no more disposable plastic bottles and synthetic ingredients — as long as you choose well.
Opt for a solid soap without palm oil, synthetic fragrance or petrochemicals, such as Marseille soap or Aleppo soap.
Our tip: to keep a solid soap for as long as possible, store it in a dry place, away from splashes of water.
4 – Fall for powder shampoo
Like industrial shower gels, conventional shampoos are far from good for your health and the environment. Fortunately, there are solid shampoos made from ingredients of natural origin, such as argan, castor, sweet almond or coconut oil. Some of them also contain aloe vera or green clay.
Prefer liquid shampoos that are gentle on hair and the environment? No problem! At Danika, we offer shampoos to make up at home, formulated with ingredients of natural origin.
5 – Discover washable wipes
Here's a good way to reduce waste in the bathroom: replace disposable make-up removal pads with organic cotton or bamboo-fibre wipes. As practical as they are responsible, they can be machine- or hand-washed and used for years.
6 – Buy a loofah
The loofah, also spelt luffa or loufah, is a plant that belongs to the gourd family (like cucumbers). This plant is used to make bath sponges, perfect for removing sweat, dirt and dead cells. Indeed, the loofah is slightly exfoliating.
To use this accessory, wet it then rub your skin with gentle, circular massaging motions. To finish, rinse with clean water. Be careful! It's not advisable to use the loofah on your face.
7 – The oriculi: a gadget for every zero-waste bathroom
To clean your ears, forget cotton buds. It's time to adopt a durable, eco-friendly solution: the oriculi. This little accessory straight from Asia is a small bamboo stick with a curved end. It removes the visible earwax at the entrance to the ear, without damaging the ear canal.
Note: the oriculi should be used sensibly, once a week at most, without pushing the stick into the ear.
8 – Switch to dilute powder laundry detergent
No more industrial detergent bottles full of chemicals! Make way for a detergent made from ingredients of natural origin, just as effective and kinder to the environment.
Sold as a dilute powder, Danika laundry detergent is biodegradable and hypoallergenic, ideal for the whole family's skin.
To make one litre of detergent:
-
Pour the powder into an amber glass bottle.
-
Add lukewarm tap water.
-
Shake once.
-
Wait a moment.
-
Shake a second time.
And there you have it, your natural, zero-waste detergent is ready!
